Surname Generator
Draw random surnames from the most common US last names (Census top list) — for fiction characters, placeholder records and pen names. Batches are repeat-free; pair with the fake name generator for full names.
Where the surnames come from
The pool is the US Census most-common surnames list — the same source phone books were full of. That makes results read natural rather than invented: Smith, Garcia, Nguyen and Patel all sit in the real top-100.
Draws use the browser's cryptographic randomness and never repeat within a batch, so generating 20 gives you 20 distinct surnames in shuffled order.

FAQ
Are these real surnames?+
Yes — real, common US surnames from Census data, which is exactly why generated characters feel plausible. No individual person is referenced: a top-100 surname is shared by hundreds of thousands of people.
Can I get surnames from other cultures?+
The current pool reflects the US mix (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Indian and more, in real proportions). Dedicated by-origin pools are a planned filter.
How do I make full names?+
Use the fake name generator — it pairs first names with surnames automatically. This page is for when you only need the last name.
