Fake Name Generator
Generate realistic-sounding placeholder names by randomly pairing common US first and last names. Pick the first-name pool (female, male or any) and how many you need — then copy the list straight into your mockup, spreadsheet or story draft.
Names are random pairings of common US first and last names, for placeholder and test data. Any match with a real person is coincidental; don't use fake identities for fraud or to deceive anyone.
How names are built
Each name pairs a random first name with a random last name. First names come from the Social Security Administration's most-popular lists across several decades; surnames come from the US Census most-common list — that's why results feel plausible without copying anyone in particular.
First names within a batch are unique; surnames can repeat, as in real life. With ~200 first names and ~100 surnames, there are about 20,000 combinations. Everything runs in your browser — no generated name is stored or sent anywhere.
Worked examples
Example 1: seeding a test database
A user table needs 20 believable names that are clearly not real customers.
- Set the pool to Any and the count to 20.count = 20
- Copy (newline-separated) and paste into your seed file or spreadsheet column.
Twenty plausible placeholder users in two clicks.
Example 2: characters for a story draft
You need minor-character names that don't all sound alike.
- Generate 10 from the pool matching the character.pool = female / male
- Pick the ones whose rhythm fits; re-roll the rest.
A varied cast list without raiding your contacts for names.
Example 3: UI mockup placeholders
Design screens shouldn't ship with "John Doe" ten times.
- Generate as many names as the screen shows.count = rows visible
- Paste one per row — varied lengths catch layout bugs that identical placeholders hide.
Realistic, varied mockup data that also stress-tests the layout.
FAQ
Are these real people's names?+
The parts are real, common US names, but the pairings are random. With both lists drawn from the most common names in the country, almost any combination is shared by someone — matches are coincidental, not personal data about anyone.
Is it legal to use fake names?+
For test data, placeholders, fiction, demos and privacy on non-binding forms — generally yes. It is NOT okay to impersonate someone, commit fraud, or enter false identities on legal, financial or government documents. This tool is for the first list.
Does the generator create emails, addresses or birthdays?+
No — names only, by design. Generated "full identities" are a common fraud tool; names alone cover the legitimate placeholder uses.
Why do some last names repeat in a batch?+
First names are dealt uniquely, but surnames are independent draws — just like a real room of people can hold two Smiths. If you need fully unique rows, de-duplicate after copying.
