Random Team Generator
Paste names (one per line), pick how many teams, and get a fair random split — sizes as even as possible, assignment totally blind. Re-shuffle until the universe smiles, then copy the teams.
How the split works
The list is shuffled with a Fisher–Yates shuffle driven by cryptographic randomness, then dealt round-robin into teams like cards — so team sizes differ by at most one person, and every assignment is equally likely.
Blind random splits are the fairness gold standard for casual play. They don't balance skill — for that, seed captains or rank players and alternate picks; a skill-balanced mode is on the roadmap.
Worked examples
Example 1: PE class into 4 teams
28 students, 4 teams, zero arguments.
- Paste the roster, set teams to 4.28 ÷ 4 = 7 per team
- Shuffle once in front of everyone — the transparency kills the complaints.
Four random teams of 7.
Example 2: uneven split for trivia
11 people, 3 teams.
- The deal handles the remainder automatically.sizes 4, 4, 3
- Copy the teams into the group chat.
Teams of 4, 4 and 3 — as even as 11 allows.
FAQ
Is the split really fair?+
Yes — a uniform shuffle followed by dealing gives every person an equal chance of landing in any slot of any team. No order effects: being first in the pasted list confers nothing.
Can it balance teams by skill?+
Not yet — this is a blind random split. A weighted mode (rank players, alternate strong/weak) is planned. For now, run the shuffle within skill tiers and merge.
Can two people be kept apart (or together)?+
Constraint rules are planned. The manual trick: shuffle, then swap one pair by hand — one swap keeps the rest of the randomness intact.
How many people can I paste?+
Hundreds are fine — it's all in your browser. Blank lines and stray spaces are cleaned up automatically.
