Random Color Generator
Generate colors as live swatches with their hex codes: either from a curated list of named colors (useful words like Crimson and Teal) or from the full 16.7-million-color hex space. Copy grabs name + hex for each.
How colors are generated
Hex mode draws a uniform random 24-bit value — any of the 16,777,216 RGB colors, each equally likely — and formats it as #rrggbb. Named mode draws from ~80 curated color names with their standard hex values, so results are speakable as well as usable.
Swatch text flips between black and white automatically based on the color's luminance, which is the same contrast trick you'd use in a real UI.
Worked examples
Example 1: art prompt palette
Daily art practice: paint with a palette you didn't choose.
- Generate 3–5 named colors.mode = named
- Use only those colors for the piece — constraints breed ideas.
A fresh palette and a real constraint, every day.
Example 2: testing a UI with arbitrary colors
Does your theming survive any user-picked accent color?
- Generate 10 hex colors.mode = hex
- Paste them into the theme variable one by one and look for contrast failures.
A quick fuzz test for your color handling.
FAQ
Why do random hex colors often look muddy?+
Uniform RGB sampling favors mid-brightness, low-saturation browns and olives — that's most of the cube's volume. Use named mode when you want colors humans would actually pick.
Can I generate a matching palette rather than single colors?+
Palette modes (complementary, analogous, pastel-only) are planned. Today, generating named colors several times and keeping harmonious ones works well.
What formats besides hex?+
Hex is the copy format for CSS and design tools. RGB/HSL output toggles are on the roadmap; meanwhile any hex pastes into a design tool, which shows the rest.
