DnD Name Generator

Roll up a character name that sounds like its race: names are assembled from race-flavored syllable pools — melodic elvish, hard dwarven consonants, guttural orcish — with matching surnames where the culture uses them.

How the names are built

Each race has pools of first- and second-syllables tuned to its sound: elves get liquid L/TH/AE combinations (Caelwen, Sylmir), dwarves get hard stops and -grim/-din endings, half-orcs get short guttural bursts. A name is first-syllable + second-syllable, plus a compound surname for races that use them.

The pools are original but genre-faithful — close enough to table expectations that your Durgrim Ironbeard needs no explanation, distinct enough not to copy published characters.

name = race syllable + race syllable (+ surname pair)

Worked examples

Example 1: naming tonight's character

Session starts in 10 minutes and your dwarf cleric is "TBD".

  1. Set the race, generate 6.
    race = dwarf
  2. Say the candidates aloud — pick the one you can shout across a battlefield.

A table-ready name like Thorgrim Oathhelm, in seconds.

Example 2: a DM's NPC roster

The party is about to visit an elven enclave you didn't prep.

  1. Generate 10 elf names and keep the list.
    race = elf, count = 10
  2. Assign them as NPCs appear; note who got which name.

Improvised NPCs that still sound like they belong to one culture.

FAQ

Are these official D&D names?+

No — they're original names built to match each race's sound conventions from the genre at large. That keeps them safe to use in any campaign or published homebrew.

Which races are supported?+

Human, elf, dwarf, half-orc and halfling at launch. Tiefling, gnome, dragonborn and drow pools are planned next.

Why don't half-orcs get surnames?+

Genre convention: orcish cultures typically use single names or earned epithets rather than family surnames. Add your own epithet — Kragdush the Unbroken beats any generated surname.

Can I use these for books and games, not just D&D?+

Yes — the names are original output, free to use in your fiction, games and worldbuilding.
