Tip Calculator

Enter your bill, pick a tip percentage, and see the tip, the total, and how much each person pays. The solution steps below the result show exactly how the numbers were computed, so you can redo them in your head at the table.

Tip formula

A tip is a percentage of the bill. Convert the percentage to a decimal by dividing by 100, then multiply it by the bill amount:

To split the bill, divide the total by the number of people. A quick mental shortcut: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left; 20% is that doubled; 15% is 10% plus half of it again.

tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ people

Worked examples

Example 1: 18% tip on a $64.50 dinner

Your dinner bill is $64.50 and you want to leave an 18% tip.

  1. Convert 18% to a decimal.
    18 ÷ 100 = 0.18
  2. Multiply the bill by 0.18 to get the tip.
    $64.50 × 0.18 = $11.61
  3. Add the tip to the bill.
    $64.50 + $11.61 = $76.11

The tip is $11.61 and the total is $76.11.

Example 2: 20% tip split between 4 people

A $128.00 bill with a 20% tip, split evenly between 4 friends.

  1. 20% of $128 — double the 10%.
    $12.80 × 2 = $25.60
  2. Add the tip to the bill.
    $128.00 + $25.60 = $153.60
  3. Divide by 4 people.
    $153.60 ÷ 4 = $38.40

Each person pays $38.40 (that includes $6.40 of tip each).

Example 3: quick 15% without a calculator

Estimate a 15% tip on a $42 lunch in your head.

  1. Take 10% by moving the decimal point one place left.
    10% of $42 = $4.20
  2. Take half of that for the extra 5%.
    $4.20 ÷ 2 = $2.10
  3. Add the two parts.
    $4.20 + $2.10 = $6.30

A 15% tip is about $6.30.

FAQ

How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?+

For sit-down service, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary, with 18–20% now the norm in most cities. Exceptional service often gets more than 20%; counter service is discretionary.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?+

Etiquette guides say the pre-tax subtotal is sufficient, since tax isn't a service. In practice many people tip on the total for simplicity — on a typical bill the difference is small.

How much do I tip for delivery or takeout?+

Food delivery usually gets 10–20% (at least a few dollars, more in bad weather). Plain takeout has no strict expectation; around 10% is a kind gesture for a large or complicated order.

Should the tip be split before or after dividing the bill?+

It doesn't change the math: dividing the tipped total by the number of people gives the same result as adding each person's share of the tip separately. This calculator divides the final total evenly.

Is a tip calculated before or after a discount or coupon?+

Tip on what the bill would have been without the discount — the staff did the same work. If a voucher halves your bill, calculate the tip from the original amount.
