Worked examples
Example 1: lot listing in square feet
A listing says the lot is 15,246 sq ft. How many acres?
- Divide by 43,560.15,246 ÷ 43,560 = 0.35
- Sanity check against the quarter-acre anchor (10,890).15,246 > 10,890 → more than ¼ acre ✓
0.35 acres — a bit over a third of an acre.
Example 2: how big is 2.5 acres in feet?
Convert 2.5 acres to square feet, and picture it as a square.
- Multiply by 43,560.2.5 × 43,560 = 108,900 sq ft
- Side of the equivalent square.√108,900 ≈ 330 ft per side
108,900 sq ft — a square about 330 × 330 ft.
Example 3: from lot dimensions
A 150 × 120 ft lot — what fraction of an acre?
- Area in square feet.150 × 120 = 18,000
- Divide by 43,560.18,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.41 acres
About 0.41 acres.
