Cat Name Generator

Shuffle through popular cat names — girl, boy, or the classic black-cat set (Salem, Binx, Midnight…) — until one fits the cat in front of you. Batches are repeat-free; copy your shortlist when you're close.

How to pick a cat name (and how the generator helps)

Cats do learn their names — a 2019 University of Tokyo study showed cats distinguish their name from similar words, even spoken by strangers. They respond best to short names, and high-pitched endings ("Kitty", "Mochi") match how cats hear: their hearing peaks far above human speech range.

The pools are the most popular US cat names (girl ~80, boy ~80) plus a curated black-cat list drawn from the classics — witchy, night-sky and shadow themes. Draws are random and unique within a batch.

Worked examples

Example 1: naming a black kitten

A black kitten needs a name that isn't the obvious first pick.

  1. Switch the list to Black cat and generate 6.
    list = black, count = 6
  2. Veto, re-roll, shortlist three, and try each out loud at feeding time.

A themed shortlist beyond "Blackie" — e.g. Nyx, Ember, Bagheera.

Example 2: the name-response test

Two finalists — which does the cat respond to?

  1. Say each name in the same cheerful tone when the cat is relaxed, a few sessions per name.
ear flicks / head turns = response
  2. Pick the one with more reactions; reinforce it with a treat each time.

The cat votes — which is the only vote that matters.

FAQ

What are the most popular cat names?+

Luna is the runaway #1 for girls in US lists, followed by Bella and Lily; Oliver, Leo and Milo lead for boys. Black cats most often get Salem, Binx, Shadow and Midnight.

Do cats really know their names?+

Yes — controlled studies (Saito et al., 2019) show cats discriminate their own name from similar-length words. Responding is another matter: a cat that knows its name may still file your call under "optional".

Can I rename an adult cat?+

Yes. Pair the new name with food and good moments for a couple of weeks; most cats transfer. Keeping a similar sound ("Misty" → "Missy") speeds it up.

Why do so many cat names end in -y or -i?+

Bright, high-pitched endings sit closer to the frequencies cats hear best and mimic the chirpy tone people naturally use with cats — so "Kitty", "Mochi" and "Ziggy" feel cat-shaped. It's convention plus a bit of acoustics.
