Final Exam Calculator

Enter your current grade, the grade you want for the course, and how much the final exam is worth — and see the score you need on the final. It also tells you when the target is already locked in, or out of reach.

Final exam grade formula

If the final is worth w of the course (say 20% = 0.20), everything you've done so far is worth the remaining 1 − w. Your course grade will be current × (1 − w) + final × w. Solve that for the final score:

A result of 0% or less means the target is already secured; over 100% means it's mathematically out of reach (unless there's extra credit). The lighter the final's weight, the less it can move your grade in either direction.

needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
w = final's weight as a decimal

Worked examples

Example 1: pushing an 88 to an A−

Current grade 88%, the final is 20% of the course, and you want 90%.

  1. Points secured by the other 80% of the course.
    88 × 0.80 = 70.4
  2. Points the final must supply.
    90 − 70.4 = 19.6
  3. Divide by the final's weight.
    19.6 ÷ 0.20 = 98%

You need 98% on the final — possible, but demanding.

Example 2: what do I need just to pass?

Current grade 72%, final worth 30%, passing is 60%.

  1. Secured points.
    72 × 0.70 = 50.4
  2. Needed from the final.
    (60 − 50.4) ÷ 0.30 = 32%

Just 32% on the final keeps a passing grade.

Example 3: is an A still possible?

Current grade 85%, final worth 15%, target 93%.

  1. Secured points.
    85 × 0.85 = 72.25
  2. Needed from the final.
    (93 − 72.25) ÷ 0.15 = 138.3%

138% — an A is out of reach with this final; the best possible course grade is 85 × 0.85 + 100 × 0.15 = 87.25%.

FAQ

Where do I find the final's weight?+

In the course syllabus grade breakdown (e.g. homework 30%, midterms 50%, final 20%). If the syllabus lists points instead of percentages, the weight is the final's points divided by the course's total points.

What if the final replaces my lowest midterm or counts twice?+

Then the simple formula doesn't apply directly — compute the weight the final effectively carries in each scenario. For "final can replace a midterm" policies, run the number both ways and take the better outcome.

What's a realistic score to aim for?+

Look at your own exam history in the course: if your midterms were 80–85%, planning on a 98% final is risky. The calculator also shows the grade you'd land at with a typical-for-you score — just set the target to different values.

My needed score is negative — can I skip the final?+

Mathematically the target is secured, but check the syllabus first: many courses require taking the final to pass, regardless of the grade math.
